How Thistledown Insulation San Francisco Was Born in San Francisco

We didn’t start Thistledown Attic Insulation. The brand already existed, built by the Cedarwell family around a simple idea: keep the heat where you want it. But bringing it to San Francisco was a deliberate choice, not a territory map someone handed us. Neil Barron spent years watching San Francisco homeowners wrestle with the same problem. Houses in the Sunset and Richmond districts get damp. Victorians in the Mission leak air through walls that haven’t been touched since the cable cars were new. And too many insulation crews treated those homes like generic jobs, not like places where a family sleeps, a kid does homework, a cat naps in the sunroom.

Neil had seen the other side of it. He’d walked into attics where the previous company left fiberglass scraps and boot prints everywhere. He’d talked to homeowners who’d been quoted one price on the phone and handed a different one after the work was done. The promise he made when opening this branch was simple: every job in San Francisco would get a written price before any work starts, and every home would be treated like the people living there matter. That’s the Cedarwell Care Promise, and it’s not marketing language. It’s the reason this location exists.

Neil Barron’s Personal Connection to the Insulation Trade

Neil didn’t grow up dreaming about insulation. Nobody does. But he remembers the first attic he ever crawled into, early in his working life, and how wrong it felt. The homeowner was standing on a ladder below, watching. The air was hot and close, full of dust that tasted like old plaster. Neil looked around and saw exactly what the problem was: gaps around a recessed light, a section of batt insulation installed backward, a soffit vent blocked by someone’s rush job. The fix wasn’t complicated. But when he explained it, he watched the homeowner’s face change from worried to relieved. That was the moment the work became personal.

Over the years, the pattern repeated. A family in Richmond whose heating bill dropped noticeably after one afternoon of proper air sealing. A couple in Piedmont with a newborn, worried about off-gassing, who needed someone patient enough to explain product options without jargon. Neil learned that insulation is one of the few trades where you can’t see the result, but you feel it every single day. A quieter house. A warmer bedroom. Air that doesn’t smell like the crawl space. He got into this work because it fixes problems people live with for years without knowing they’re fixable. What keeps him in it is the moment a homeowner walks through their house after the job and says it feels different. He’s been at this for more than a decade, and that moment hasn’t gotten old.

If he weren’t doing this, Neil would probably be building something with his hands anyway. He’s spent years in attics and crawl spaces, in houses from Vallejo to San Bruno, and he still notices how a well-built home breathes. The work taught him patience, and it taught him humility: you can’t rush a job in a tight space and expect it to hold up for twenty years.

Meet Neil Barron – The Person Behind Every Job

Neil Barron is the Owner and Founder of this San Francisco branch of Thistledown Attic Insulation. He leads the local team, sets the standards for how we work, and makes the final call on jobs that need a second look. His background is in the insulation and weatherization trades, and he has spent years learning how different San Francisco building styles behave: 1920s stucco in the Sunset, mid-century apartments in Hayward, hillside homes in Castro Valley where the wind does what it wants. He’s not a franchise technician running a script. He is the person who decided this market deserved a branch that actually cleans up after itself.

Outside of work, Neil spends his free time restoring old furniture. He likes things that are built to last and hates throwaway workmanship, which tells you something about how he runs an insulation crew. His commitment to you is direct: if the job isn’t done right, we don’t consider it done. Period.

Our Promise to San Francisco Homeowners

We work by the Cedarwell Care Promise, and we mean it. Shoe covers and drop cloths go down inside your house before we start. We ask before we move or touch anything that isn’t part of the job. We keep quiet tools for homes with sleeping kids or nervous pets. We take a photo of the cleanup before we leave. And the price you approve before the work starts is the price you pay. That last part has cost us a few jobs over the years, because some homeowners are used to lower quotes that balloon later. We’d rather lose the job than break the trust. The families we work with come back, and they tell their neighbors.

Our Credentials

Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. That’s a condition of working with Thistledown Attic Insulation, and it’s not negotiable.

  • Licensing: Each technician is required to carry the state license their trade requires before they step onto your property.
  • Insurance & bonding: Every pro is required to be insured and bonded per state and local requirements.
  • Experience: Neil Barron leads this branch with more than ten years of hands-on work in Bay Area homes.
  • Reputation: This location is independently owned and operated, and our business comes largely from homeowners who know our work firsthand.

Those credentials matter because you’re letting someone into your attic, your crawl space, and your home. You should know the person carrying the insulation into your house is qualified, covered, and accountable. We’d expect the same if the roles were reversed.

Rooted in San Francisco

We work across the whole Bay side of the metro: San Francisco neighborhoods like the Richmond, the Sunset, Noe Valley, and Bernal Heights, plus the East Bay and North Bay cities. Every job teaches us something new about local construction and local weather. We know how Karl the Fog pushes moisture into west-facing walls. We know that a Lafayette hillside house and a Vallejo flat need different approaches. We’re not from every town, and we don’t pretend to be. We’re a local team that agreed to work to a higher standard, and we show up like it.
